Speculative Bear

Concept sketch for another piece of speculative evolution...
Perhaps a distant relative of the Atlas bear, this is my idea of a bear that has adapted to living in Africa, namely on the savannah and similar landscapes.

I imagine it would be the largest known bear, adapted for a scavenging lifestyle and primarily a meat-eater, relying less on plants, berries etc than other bears, simply because there's less of them in its native climate. As it is rather too large and slow to chase down most prey, as well as being without pack mates to help it, it has evolved great size, a fearsome look and a bad attitude in order to be able to scare other predators - including pack hunting cats and hyenas etc - from their kills. Most of the face lacks fur, instead showing glaring red skin (red being an intimidating colour). The muzzle is black, showing off the white teeth. The bear is very large and bulky, mostly tan in colour. The fur is very short and fine and the ears relatively large to help it cope with the heat, though it also likes to move during the darker hours - its size and bulk makes it sluggish in the heat of the day.

While it can't chase down smaller, faster prey, the Savannah bear's great size, strength and aggression means it is actually capable of taking down young rhinos, elephants and other megafauna.
